Restore points do not work

I have a HP Pavilion a420n running XP home.
The computer seems to be running fine except for one HP installed program
which attempts to configure "Fax" whenever it is launched so I have to go to
Task Mgr to shut it down.
I thought if I restored to an earlier date it might solve the problem.
However, none of my restore points will work.
The program is not that important to me but the lack of restore points maybe
a problem in the future.
I was thinking of doing a complete system recovery but if someone can
suggest a quicker solution I will appreciate it.

This happens all too often with System Restore.
Great idea, yep - but it seems to have quirks.
Personally, I do the following every so often (when I feel my machine is
working fine and before I do any major updating..)

Turn off System Restore.

Reboot.
Turn on System Restore.

Make a Manual Restoration Point.

I just posted a System Restore question on alt.windows-xp newsgroup. I have
done it twice and the system did startup and run but it wasn't 100%, close
but not 100%. I use Drive Image for making system backups but tried using
System Restore since it is a bit faster. I think I'll stick to making
images - it always works.
