Restore Folder Icon after moving the folder?!

I

igor

Hi all,

I find this very annoying and a big problem:

I have lots of family photos organized in many folders. Each folder, in
thumbnail view, is customized to have a certain picture to represent it and
it is set as a Photo album. Whenever I copy the whole Pictures folder to
someone, or even if I just move the whole folder to another location, my
settings get lost, that is, the thumbnail photo is gone and folder view is
Documennts now. Then I have to reset each individual folder, which is almost
impossible now because I have about 300 folders. I tried to copy Thumbs.db
system file on together with the folders but that didn't work either. Would
you know of any fix for this please as I would like to give people the
folder the same way I have it customized, or to be able to move it on
another harddrive with all the settings remembered?

Hope you can help,

Thanks a lot and sorry for trouble

These types of folder view customisations are on a per user basis unlike
folder backgrounds which are global to all users. The upshot of this is
that the view customisation including folder thumbnail info is stored in
the current user part of the registry as "bags". XP by default will
store 400 bags before the 1st ones customised get overwritten
(corrupted).

Unfortunately, implementation is very poor - delete or *move* a
customised folder & the bag remains in the registry but is effectively
dead. Moving folders merely creates a new folder with the default view
applied & any customisation needs to be reapplied.

The bad news comes as a double helping: you can't do anything (I know of
that is easier than just reapplying) to copy folder views & if you don't
change XP's default bag allocation ASAP, you will corrupt all your
existing folder customisations beyond repair & will have to start from
scratch. merging the following reg keys will allow the number of folder
customisations to approach 8000:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell]
"BagMRU Size"=dword:00001f40

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam]
"BagMRU Size"=dword:00001f40

Bags are stored in the ShellNoRoam key. If the they get corrupted, not
only will folders lose their customisation but unrelated ones will
suddenly default to Thumbnail view with unrelated pictures or exhibit
other side-effects. If your bags are already corrupted, d/l & merge the
reg file on line 2:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
which deletes your bags & includes the keys mentioned above.
