A whie agoI managed to clear my desktop of all icons, to give it that clean look. The only one I couldn't get rid of was the Network Neighourhood icon, which I gave a diffferent icon and hid below the task bar.
However, this is bad! File dialogs in some programs do not come equipped with a pah display, and the root of the dialog is the desktop. My desktop does not have a My Computer, so I can't navigate to any files. Adding shorcuts to the desktop does not help. and unfortunately I can't for the life of me remember how I got rid of the stuff in the first place. How do I restore the default desktop settings?

keyboard >> Winkey + E opens Explorer, navigate to control panel, open
folder options, view tab, advanced settings, "Show My Documents on the
Desktop", OK.
