i am creating a contact, clicked on the "Category" tab at the lower right
hand corner of the screen, and all of my categories are gone. Only the
default categories are there.

is there a way to restore the categories I have assigned?

The category words still exist when you view the contacts "by Category"

Restore what? You should start by telling us what Categories you "lost" and
how you managed to do so. I suspect you perpetrated this crime, not Outlook.

Hello Rose,

Sorry for a late reply, but there may be some good news here depending on
what you have done. If you have rebuilt your computer and reinstalled the
software, your categories may be missing because the original 'Master
Category List' was lost when you rebuilt and reinstalled Outlook again.
Nevertheless, your categories still exist, along with your contacts, and
other items in any backups of the old .PST database file. Since the
categories were maintained in the registry, they were probably lost. While
there are several ways to restore the 'Master Category List' if you still
have a backup for your old registry, the best solution comes in the form of
the new Outlook 2007. When you open your old backup .PST file in Outlook
2007, you have the option of adding the categories in that .PST file to
Outlook. As such, all your pre-existing categories are imported into your
current category list.

Good Luck!
