Restarting by itself..

Hi,

My computer, which I built myself, turns itself back on approximately
5 seconds after it has been shut down. The only way I can turn it off
permanently is to yank out the power cable before it starts up again.
Any ideas what might be causing this?

check your power settings in the bios

turn off all things related to 'waking up'

make sure your 'power button' setting is set to 'OFF' not 'soft off' in windows power
settings and in bios
 
If you press the re-start button does it then shut down? If 'yes' it seems
your wires are crossed.
 
I normally choose 'turn off' from the start menu, but even when I use
the power button the same thing happens...

There isn't anything in BIOS about soft off, but I've set all values
to default, and the same thing happens..

Any ideas?

"Restore on Power Loss' [Power Off] is one setting.
That setting can be used to cause a computer to reboot on power
loss. The [Power Off] choice means the computer won't
try to boot, after a power failure.

My motherboard has several "Power On by ..."
settings and they are all disabled.

Wake On Lan is also a possible source. There are two
kinds of Wake on Lan. In Windows, you can select waking
from a specific ("magic") packet. But some LAN chips
also support waking when *any* activity at all is detected,
and that setting can cause a computer to wake up
immediately.

For Wake On Lan to work, usually the BIOS
"Power On by PCI device" would have to be
enabled. That enables the PME# signal from a slot,
to wake the computer. Built-in LAN chips also
share the PME# signal.

BIOS is set to power off on power loss, and no wake on lan or wake on
anything is enabled...

Thanks for your suggestions, but it still remains a mystery for now..
 
what does the event viewer in windows admin tools say
do you have reboot on errors enabled in windows?


if none of this is happening or the event viewer shows nothing, then I suspect the power
supply

Also agree on powersupply. I had a problem with trying to restart and
the entire computer would power down. PSU is always a pain.
 
Ys, I think it must be the power supply..

When I pulled the case out after a year in storage and turned it on,
the power supply made an explosion and lots of smoke etc.

To my surprise, it still worked when i tried to turn it on again, and
still works to this day.

Sounds like it's stuffed.

That is a pretty important symptom :-) Most people wouldn't
switch it on a second time, after it smokes...
