resolution

I currently changed a hard for a friend and re-installed
windows xp. after I re-installed xp it will not let me
change the resolution from 800x600. I downloaded the
driver for the monitor (dell 17inch flat panel) but when
I go to display->settings->advance->monitor it's reading
the monitor as a default monitor instead of an lcd. also
the properties button is disablied so I cannot go to
download driver. So then I went to to the video adapter
tab on the same path and clicked on list all modes. I
changed it to 1024x768. so then it restarted the computer
and wouldn't display anything after the the windows
loading screen went off. So I ran a repair on windows xp.
Now it shows it in 1024x768 but it looks like crap. (she
has an integrated intel video card and 128 mb ram). She
claims that before the hard drive change it was in
smaller resolution and looked fine. What should I do next?

After you installed XP did you also install the motherboard drivers? They
should be on a CD she got with the motherboard. It should include video
drivers, chipset, etc.
