resizing .jpg files

I have Microsoft image resizer installed and had used it often in the
past. Lately, however, it does not seem to work. I did notice that
all of my photos have the .jpg extension. I "renamed" one of the
photos by simply changing the extension to a .tif. Then, the resizer
works.

I have tried to run "regsvr32 shimgvw.dll" and it said "successfully
completed" but still the image resizer seems only to work on images in
my photo folders that are tif images. Strangly though, if I have a
..jpg image, all I have to do is "change" the extension to .tif, and the
image will open, plus microsoft image resizer will work fine then.

With the .jpg extension, right clicking will bring up the "option" to
resize, but when clicking then on "resize" nothing happens. Only will
work with the .tif.

Any thoughts/suggestions? I could "rename" all my phots with a .tif
extension but that seems a bit drastic.

Thanks for any input.

I have not seen the exact issue you describe
but the following info may be useful.....

==============================
You may need to do some editing in your
registry...carefully read the following article
first before proceeding:

Information About Editing the Registry
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=256986#Topic2

==============================
".jpg extension may be incorrect in registry"

Go to...Start / Run...

Type in "regedit" (without the quotes)...OK.

In your registry editor...drill down to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/jpeg

What is entered at "Extension"? (should be: .jpg)
(don't change anything...just observe)

Also you might check:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/pjpeg

What is entered at "Extension"? (should be: .jpg)

If the *Extensions* are incorrect, changing them to .jpg
may solve your problem.

To make the change...

Left click "Extension" to select it.

With "Extension" selected...go to...Edit / Modify...

Replace the text in the "Value data" field with
".jpg" (without the quotes)...OK.

Close the registry editor....File / Exit.

Thanks so much for responding. I did run regedit, and in both
locations, the extension is .jpg.

Not sure why/what I'm having this particular problem. For right now, I
convert the images to a .tif file utilizing IrfranView, and then can
easily resize for emailing. (Also can resize in Irfran). But the
Microsoft image resizing tool was so easy to use, just right click,
click on resize, and up pops the little box with size choices. I really
like it. I'm positive that it used to work on jpg images, but will just
"live with it" and use a little slower work-around.

Thanks again, John, for your input. I really appreciated it!

Thanks again, John, but I have already done that a couple of times. I
even re downloaded in case the original was corrupted, but no luck.

Guess it will remain one of those computer conundrums.

Thanks again.

You're welcome.

Maybe someone else will have
a better idea.

If you discover the fix please share
it with this newsgroup.

Hi Michael, Your problem seems very unusual and interesting.

Have you also tried to uninstall and then re-install the powertoy? What
about changing the extension to any other type: gif png jpeg

What is the default application for opening jpg files ? WHat other image
editing apps are there on the system?

Yes, I have uninstalled and then re-installed the powertoy (even after
re-downloading to make sure the program itself was not corrupted).

This seems to work if I change the extension by "renaming" to a .gif
file, as well as a .jpeg file. Not sure why exactly, as all I do is
change the extension. It must have something to do with file type
associations, and I have played with that some to no avail.

The basic image editing programs on my machine are only IrfranView,
Windows Picture & Fax Viewer, and there is an imaging viewer program
with my Dell inkjet printer (A920). Also, I have Paint, as well as a
program for my wife's hobby, Scrapbook Designer by Broderbund.

WhooHoo! Mystery solved (or at least fixed). I did some more googling
and finally found this: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/imgassofix.htm

I downloaded it, ran the program, clicked on restore image file
assocation for .jpg, and voila! All is well again!

Seems like a fairly unimportant issue, but for some reason, when I get
into situations like this, it is very hard for me to let go until I
figure it out.

Anyway, thanks so much all for your interest and input. Maybe this
little program imgeditor.exe can help someone else along the way someday.

Thanks for the feedback, Michael. Looks like the ProgID for .JPG files was
the problem. By default, it's set to "jpegfile", and installating a
third-party program might overtake the associations.

I have figured out how to resize 1 digital photo. But how do you resize 240
photos at once so I can save them to CD to take to Costco (my photo
developer) for development in a 4"X6" format??

Do I need to download "Image Resizer" as referred to by Mike of Milwakee??

Thanks.. Tom of Long Beach
