Resetting local admin password

T

Tom Del Rosso

A user forgot the admin password of a stand-alone 2000 PC. I tried the
"alternate logon" method, where you copy cmd.exe to logon.scr, so cmd.exe
runs as the screen saver for the logon screen using the system account, and
then reset the password from the command line.

Strangely, I was able to rename the logon.scr and cmd.exe files in c:\winnt
using the user account, when I should have needed to put the hard drive in
another PC first. Then, on the opposite side, when the cmd window popped up
as a screen saver it should have been running under the system account, but
it said I didn't have permission to change the password.

Suggestions?

Thanks. It's the same thing as the bin file. I didn't recognize that file
at first, but I actually tried it and it didn't work. If people have had
success with it then there must be something about the target system. It
has a drive overlay, so I'll try it again with a new host adapter.

Hi,
or you may visit Mr.Petri's Website which gives you perfect explaination
and suggest tools too , http://www.petri.co.il

That's where I first learned how to do it. It just didn't work as expected.
The CMD window opens after 15 minutes and I get the same denial of
permission message as if running CMD as user.
