Reset XP net connection number

XP plug and play (aka pray) has the annoying issue of adding a number
to the Network Connections. I am updating my wireless adapter(s) and
my wireless connection is now at 16.

Can this number be reset?

Hi
This is a Psychological issue rather than a technology problem.
The number is just an ID name. I.e., it does not mean that you have more
than one active configured adapter.
Think of it has being adapter name Jack instead of number X.
There is a way to reset it but it involves Registry, Hidden files, and
multiple rebooting, thus it can do harm while providing Nothing that is
really needed.

Yes. Right-click the connection and click Rename.

I am aware of the "renaming" of the connection. I always wondered
how / where this number is generated from and if this "counter" can
either be turned off or reset.
