All of the folders and graphics in the 'My Pictures' folder are suddenly
gray. If I right click on the item(s) and then click on 'reset thumbnail',
the problem is fixed. Is there a 'global' setting somewhere to handle this?
What would cause such an event? thanks...

Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys from (if you have installed XP
SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP!, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

Its Explorer - Thumbnails page, have the slider left to about 2/3 at
most - this greying effect happens if it is too large. You will need to
have Folder Options - View set to show Hidden files, and *not* Hide
Protected mode ones, swap folders to a non-Thumbnail view, and delete
the Thumbs.db file from each folder to get rid of the old ones.
