Hi,
Last Sunday morning, I started my PC............and it wouldn't boot up.
In order to get started, eventually I had to re-format the disk and
re-install XP.

A few days later as the fury had subsided, realising that all of my software
had to be re-installed, it crossed my mind that back in the Windows 98 days
it was possible to create a system startup disk.
Question is, would this have solved the problem? Using the rescue console in
the Windows XP CD did nothing.
Also, could I create a startup disk from Norton's Utilities?

Best wishes,
Phil

Hi Phil,

The dos boot diskette in Win98 simply allowed you to access the system to
work on it. The same thing can be done by using the Recovery Console in
WinXP (see below). Whether or not this would have helped you avoid a format
and clean install depends largely on exactly what was wrong.
