I am a long time user of Norton AntiVirus (NAV), and have
recently installed Windows 2002 XP. In the past I have
backed up my entire C drive weekly, taking the NAV option
of creating Rescue Disks after each virus definition
update or other update to my software or hardware.
Although I have never had to use the disks, for peace of
mind I have continued to spend the 10 or so minutes to
update them each time I update.
I was surprised to see when I recently installed NAV 2004
that it no longer allows Rescue Disk creation/updating
under Windows XP. According to Symantec, "Limitations
and security implications presented by Windows NT/2000/XP
do not allow Norton Rescue to function in the same manner
as it does in Windows 95/98/ME."
Is there another way to create/update rescue disks?
Norton defines rescue disks as allowing you to restart
your PC in DOS mode when its hard disk is damaged or
infected. A set consists of one bootable floppy, one NAV
floppy, and floppies containing the NAV virus definitions.
