Windows doesn't clear the Run command history by itself, you must have
used another tool to enable this. Maybe you enabled this with TweakUI
or something like CCleaner?

Not saying it isn't so, but which TweakUI or CCleaner settings would
bring on the clearing of the RUN command on reboot?

Look in the CCleaner Options/Settings, if you set it to run when the
computer starts it will delete the Run history if this is checked in the
"Windows Explorer" section. I don't have TweakUI installed but I
believe this would be in the "Paranoia" tab. Other MRU cleaners and
utilities of this type can also be set to clear these automatically when
the computer is booted. It could also be done by way of startup/logon
or shutdown scripts, the OP will have to do his homework to find out
what is going on with his machine, Windows doesn't delete these Run MRUs
on its own.

Got it. I just wanted to know where it was.

Tweak UI seems to have done away with the Paranoia tab, but you can
still have it clear stuff like that through Explorer, Clear document
history on exit setting.

Much grass.

Thanks for your reply. I use CCleaner, but have it configured *not* to
clear Run when I use it every night when I leave my PC. Then I perform
a dns flush using Run and since the command line is still there
CCleaner hasn't removed it. But if I reboot, the Run window is blank
and any command lines that were there before I rebooted have been
removed.

I'll try TweakUI and see if that helps.

Thank you.

I've downloaded and installed TweakUI v2.10.0.0 for Windows XP. And a
Google search for instructions turned up a suggestion that I "uncheck
the option Clear document history on exit in the Explorer section."

That option was already unchecked, but I saved the settings anyway ...
rebooted and BINGO! The ipconfig .flushdns command was still there.

Now I'll try and figure out how to stop CD's, DVD's and flashdrives
from autoloading or opening a dialog window with multiple options.

I did a bit more digging into this and found out that there is a
registry based policy for this:

ClearRecentDocsOnExit
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

Anything could have easily enabled the policy.

Isn't TweakUI a user friendly way to edit the registry?

True. And I'll probably never know what triggered it.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Whatever would we do without Windows to keep us on our toes? I no
longer have any hair to pull out ...

I think you'll find that John wasn't suggesting that I not use TweakUI
and edit the entry myself. I think he was just pointing out the
registry entry that had been enabled - for some inexplicable reason.

Apparently, using TweakUI and saving what I assume is a default
setting changed the registry back to where it was *before* it changed
(for no apparent reason).
