req: resque files from bad floppy

T

Thorsten Duhn

Hello,

anyone know a tool to read files from damaged floppies,
that explorer refuses to read/copy. There are plenty for
flash cards, hard discs and stuff, but for floppy I found
nothing pleasing. I found RESQFLPY*, which is able to create
a propitery disc image to copy to another, valid floppy,
but why not just copy the needed files to hard disc? And
maybe a tool, that interacts better with current windows OS?
And has a better usage?

Regards,
Thorsten

Acording to no longer available "Free Software For DOS"
(Richard L. Green): "License: RESQFLPY and FIXBOOT are
freeware, but are packaged together with commercial tools
comprising the RESQ software suite."

This week, I was able to just do that.
I passed the software "Spinrite v3.1" (not a freeware). After, I used "PC
Inspector Fiole Recovery" (freeware) to get bask the file from the floppy.

Note that the floppy is still unreadable by Windows.

Hello,
After, I used "PC Inspector Fiole Recovery" (freeware) to get
bask the file from the floppy.

oh, tried that and couldn't get the files. I was just too stupid.
Tried again now and it works with one of two damaged floppies.
The other one produces "NT_read error", "divide by zero" error
message and then program hangs. 50% success is okay, but not that
reliable as it should be.
Note that the floppy is still unreadable by Windows.

I just want the content, that's all ;-)

As I said, I had success with RESQFLPY, but these two floppies
may only be the beginning of a number of floppies, that should
be copied to the new system of my girl friend. So a very simple
to use solution would be best.

Regards,
Thorsten

Probably KopyMate (front end for xxcopy) in as much as is possible to read.

This program is great for recovering files from scratched CD's or defective
floppy/hard disks. Normally when your computer is unable to copy a file from
a damaged disk it will abort and delete the portition of the file it has
copied. This program however will continue to copy the file right to the
end. Any data that is not recoverable after many retries is replaced with
blanks. This will allow you to truely recover every byte of information that
is available for recovery. The program allows you to specify a single file,
a group using wildcards (* and ?) or if you wish, select a starting folder
and the program will copy all data from it and any sub folders it may
contain. This program doesn't just need to be used for copying files form
defective disks, it can be used to transfer any files!

Worked for me just now.

How about 'Disktest PRO v1.3' for the OP?

<BLURB>
Disktest PRO is a Windows 9x/NT/XP (32Bits) program to analyze, repair
or modify 3.5\" Double Sided High Density floppy disks on first floppy
drive (A:). You can test floppy disks, search for bad sectors, repair
bad sectors, format, quick format, recover data on bad sectors, make
backups, mark/unmark bad sectors, erase data without using files, test
floppy disk speed on reading. Data, when recovered, is 100% reliable.
More than 3 pass testing is made to recover bad sectors. You can also
format individual parts of the disk even with bad sectors on system
area. All tasks can be viewed in an interface that lets the user see
what is going on and where on the disk. All disk sectors are visible
but more views are available. Source can be obtained.

Program type: freeware

System requirements: VB6 runtime

Is one place to DL from, Google has several other choices.

I haven't used DT Pro personally, but have read some favorable reports.
As usual YMMV.

Hello,

This is probably the one I pick. Also (like FlopShow) is
only able to copy one file a time, but has long filenames.
And usage is easy.

!!! Result from all posts: "Unstoppable Copier" for single files,
"FlopShow" for floppy images. !!!

Thanks,
Thorsten

DL not working, but homepage link leads to version 1.2 at
http://tealtech.8m.com/
Tucows has 1.3 at
http://www.tucows.com/preview/347622.html

I found no option to save just the files, it's usage is a bit
difficult, but as windows replacement for DOS RESQFLPY it may
be cool!

Hello,

Really nice. Clean interface, working with both invalid
floppies, only cons are missing long file names (only 8+3)
and not able to recover more than one file at a time. But
this has a floppy imaging feature as well, so for this
purpose the easy interface is reason to use this.

"FlopShow" for floppy images. !!!

Thanks,
