REQ: e-Mail Client

S

scootgirl.com

Hi,

I need to find a replacement for OE that has mail filters that let me say
all mail from X account move to X folder, or a client that have one inbox
per account. Thunderbird doesn't seem to have this simple but powerful
option.

The client also needs to support SSL connection to the e-mail servers.

Thanks,

Karen

Scoots, I have used Eudora for ages, it has its issues, IMAP, they say, is
improved with ver 6.2 but I won't try it quite yet.

POP/SMPT has been right on and most everything else works pretty well.

Two watchouts:

1) 6.2 "whitescreens" on email when clicked on sometimes and often with
attachments. Hesitates then loads OK.

2) Personalities can get confused on Reply so make sure you got the one you
want before Sending.

I have been through the ringer so if you want me to suggest plugins, etc,
let me know here and I will.

Also, Google Groups or join the Eudora Usenet ng.

Hi Chrissy,

I d/l-ed it again to give it a try, but it looks like it only works for one
e-mail account.

OE can do that. You define a new message rule to automatically move new
mails to predefined folders.

Thanks, but yeah I know it can do that. What I'm seeking is a client other
than OE that also does that plus SSL.

BTW, I see now how to add more accounts to Eudora, but it's boxes are so
clunky...

Hi Chrissy,

I d/l-ed it again to give it a try, but it looks like it only works for one
e-mail account.

No, you can set up different Personalities for each account. Print below or
go to Index -->Help --> Personalities

Remember what I said about the bug about Replying with more then a Dominant
Personality. Be sure the correct one is in the From: box, Easy to change
but might slip by. Any other ??, I owe you so scoot them at me.

Personalities

Use this window to manage, access, and apply your email accounts ¡X
"multiple personalities" ¡X when you use more than one account.
The Personalities window displays two columns of data:

¡E Persona ¡X The identifying name assigned to the personality. <Dominant>
indicates your principal email account, which is the account Eudora uses
whenever you don¡¦t specify otherwise, and is the account associated with
all mail stored before you began using alternate personalities.
¡E Account ¡X The incoming mail account assigned to the personality. This is
generally in the form loginname@incomingmailserver

To resize the column widths, position the pointer over the divider line
between the column headings, until a splitter cursor appears. Then just
drag the divider to left or right. Note that it is possible to completely
collapse the Persona column.

Note: You cannot manually sort the information in the Personalities window.
Clicking on a column heading does not do a sort
Note: You can select multiple items in the Persona column to perform some
of the operations listed below. Use the Shift key to select a range of
items, and use the Ctrl key to make non-consecutive selections.

If you select one or more personalities in the Persona column and
right-click the selection, a context menu appears with the following
commands (the standard Eudora window-management commands appear at the
bottom):

¡E Check Mail ¡X Check mail now for all selected personalities.
¡E Send Queued Messages ¡X Send messages queued by all selected personalities
now.
¡E Message ¡X This submenu lets you perform message-creation functions using
only one selected personality. The submenu is unavailable if multiple
personalities are selected in the Persona column.

- New Message As ¡X Create a new message as the selected personality. As a
shortcut for this command, double-click a personality in the Persona
column, or select the personality and press Enter.
- Reply As ¡X Reply as the selected personality to the sender(s) of the one
or more received messages that are currently selected.
- Reply to All As ¡X Reply as the selected personality to the sender(s) and
all recipients of the one or more received messages that are currently
selected.

- Forward As ¡X Forward as the selected personality the one or more received
messages that are currently selected.
- Redirect As ¡X Redirect as the selected personality the one or more
received messages that are currently selected.
- Send Again As ¡X Resend as the selected personality the one or more
received or composition messages that are currently selected.

¡E New ¡X Create a new personality. When you select this command, Eudora
walks you through the New Account Wizard. Enter a Personality Name (e.g.,
My Laptop Account) and click Next. You then have the choice to create a new
email account or import the settings from an existing email account. If you
choose a new email account, Eudora prompts you for your name, your return
email address, your login name, and your incoming email server (POP or
IMAP). Fill in each item as instructed. If you choose to import the
settings from an existing email, Eudora asks you to choose the account to
import, then asks you to confirm the settings and optionally change them.
If you leave them unchanged, the imported account is created when you click
Finish. If you choose to change them, Eudora walks you through the settings
as above: name, return address, login name, and incoming email server.
Change these settings as desired, and when you are complete, the new
account is created.

¡E Properties ¡X Modify the selected personality. You can only modify one
personality at a time. When you select this command, the Account Settings
dialog displays, with its fields filled in with the information associated
with that personality. See the description of this dialog box below.
¡E Delete ¡X Delete all selected personalities. Note, however, that you
cannot delete the <Dominant> personality. You are prompted to confirm the
deletion for each personality you have selected to delete. Note that these
deletions are permanent and cannot be undone! When you delete a
personality, any messages associated with that personality are reassigned
to your Dominant personality. You can use the Del key (Delete) as a
shortcut for this command (you will still get the confirmation requests).

You can also display the context menu and create a new personality by
right-clicking in a blank area of the Personalities window, off all
personality items, when none of the items are selected. When creating a new
personality this way, you are walked through the New Account Wizard as in
the description of the New command above.
If you drag one or more received messages to a personality item in the
Personalities window, Eudora will Reply As that personality to the messages
(hold down the Ctrl key to Reply to All As).

FireFox doesn't have an e-mail client. Thunderbird - a related project - has
filters, but none that say when getting mail from one account move that mail
to said folder.

You do this thru filters. Open an incoming email and in the Preview mode,
right click on the email address (in blue on divider line between mailbox
and email).

Follow instructions and test. Incoming mail (only) is directed to the
mailbox of choice.

When you click on a folder, you don't see the contents on the right.

Plus, it looks like Eudora doesn't have the filter I need :(.

Karen

It's got filters galore. You're not looking at the right place. Right click
on an incoming email. Make Filter.

This is a little tricky because you have to be sure to select
incoming/outgoing and that you end a filter with Skip Rest.

As to Folders, right click Expand/Collapse or a mailbox, click Open.

The Bat! is a "try-before-you-buy" product. Here you can download a
fully functional copy of the software and use it for free for 30 days.
You will need to register The Bat! if you decide to continue using it
beyond the trial period.

Fantastic email client, I use it myself. But a) 1.62r is a really old
version, and b) it's not freeware.

I think Foxmail might be the closest freeware email client to what
the OP is looking for.

i forgot to mention The Bat 1.62r is freeware,

Is it?
======================
This licence describes the conditions under which
you may use version 1.62 of The Bat! ("the
program"). If you are unable or unwilling to
accept these conditions in full, then,
notwithstanding the conditions in the remainder of
this licence, you may not use the program at all.

The program is "try-before-you-buy" software.
Unregistered copy of the program can be only used
for evaluational purposes during the 30-day trial
period. Registration gives you the right to use

As far as I understand what you want, ThunderBird definitely can do
that. Just set up a simple filter to move any message in a certain
account to a certain folder.

For an account, go to Tools > "Message Filters" > "New...".
Select some condition that all emails will satisfy, for instance
"Subject" + "isn't" + "********". As action, select "Move To" and
the folder you want the emails to go to.

And voilà, you're done.

Next: one inbox per account? Sure, look at the account properties >
"Server Settings" > "Advanced...". Check "Inbox for this server's
account" and you're done.

Good luck,
Wald
