Repost:IE won't send links/page

S

Steve T

Never got the above fixed as other problems arose. Unable to find the
previous suggestions for a fix. Post on MS Community Newsgroup has no
response as of yet. Running win98SE with IE6. When I try to send a link or
page from a browser window, it does not connect. Shutting the window down
places the link/page into my Outbox of OE6 which I can then send with
Send/Receive. Also running ZoneAlarm Pro ver 5.1, but I've always had one
version or another of it. This problem did not begin after any new version
of ZA. Thanks, Steve T

Thank you Robear. The first two links did nothing. All checked out. I
printed out the MS support doc and will go through it step by step. And yes
to your query :OE Tools>Options>Send>Send messages immediately (checked?)
I will reply as soon as I go through the support suggestion. Thanks again,

Tried the support document. Still no help. The settings are correct as per

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main
Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity
(File>Identities>Add new identity). Assuming all is well, import messages
from the old Identity before deleting it (File>Identities>Manage
Identities).

Mine is the default Identity. I created a new Identity with the same
results. The same is true if my wife tries to send a link from a browser

What does "it does not connect" mean? That an OE New Message window doesn't
open or it does but the message just doesn't send automatically?

When did the problem begin? What changes (installs, uninstalls, updates,
new ISP or method of connecting) did you make to your system right before
the problem started? Had you just upgraded to IE6-SP1?

IE Help>About> What version (e.g., 6.0.1234.5678XX; NB: include any letters
at the end)?

OE Help>About> What version (e.g., 6.00.1234.5678)?

Which is your default Mail Account in OE (Tools>Accounts>Mail)?

Tools>Accounts>Mail>[default account]>Properties>Connection> Are your
settings correct here ("Always connect using...")?

Is MS Office or Outlook also installed?

Have you tried disabling your anti-virus application? Firewall? Both?
Uninstalling them?

Is your wife's OE operating within the same Windows Profile as yours or does
she have her own Profile?

OE New Message window does open but after entering address to mail, OE
cannot find the server to connect and either I close the window or it times
out. Either way the link/page goes into OE Outbox and waits there to be
mailed at a later time.

Cannot define a specific moment when it started.
IE Help>About> What version (e.g., 6.0.1234.5678XX; NB: include any letters

The settings are correct up to Connection Tab. I have Cable modem and
"Always connect using..." has never been checked.

No. I have Computer Associates eTrust AV and ZoneAlarm Pro ver 5

Did MailTo and/or SendTo links in IE ever work? Have you only recently
started using broadband to connect?
[IE version] 6.00.2800.1106CO

CO = Corporate Administrator. The version of IE/OE you're running is a
customized version which may disallow your being able to Send via IE MailTo
or SendTo links. What is the history of this machine? Was it once (or is
it now) a machine at your place of employment or did you buy it new? Did
you install IE6-SP1 on it and if so, where did you get it?
My e-mail address

No on both.

Were either of them *ever* installed?
No. I have Computer Associates eTrust AV and ZoneAlarm Pro ver 5

[Assuming your AV definitions are up to date and you scan daily...] Try all
of the above. First disable one, then the other one; then uninstall one and
then uninstall the other one. After each disable or uninstall, check IE
MailTo. One or the combination of the two *may* be causing the problem. Be
careful!
Same profile.

That makes sense and helps very much. Are either of you experiencing
strange/unusual behaviour in IE itself? Have you ever installed and used
another browser? ...have you uninstalled it?

I bought the machine brand new about 6 years ago when Quantex was still in
business. Always been a home unit, no business. I installed the above
version from MS Windows Update web site.

Sorry, POP3 is the default. No MSN/Hotmail on the system.

My AV definitions are updated daily M-F automatically and I have scanned
several times with no findings. Also went to Symantec and Trendcillin's(?)
for a system scan also. No virus detected. I run Ad-Aware 6.0, Spybot and
Spyware Blaster weekly. I clear out my internet temp files 2-3 times daily
with Norton's SystemWorks 2003.
That makes sense and helps very much. Are either of you experiencing

Nothing unusual and have never had any other browser installed.

Installing Office, especially Office 97, can break the MailTo and SendTo
associations (as can installing Office updates) even if you choose not to
install Outlook. I posted the following earlier. Your reply seems to imply
that you only checked Q306098. Please do 1 & 2 now:
If still no joy, see:
SendTo and E-mail Links Do Not Work Using Outlook Express as Default

Office 97 can also enable sharing with (OE) Address Book:

Do you have this Registry key?...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
\Software
\Microsoft
\WAB
\WAB4

If not, STOP; If so, is there a DWORD named UseOutlook and is its value set
to 1 (one)?

If not, STOP; If so, Address Book is configured to share contacts with
Outlook, even if you don't use it. Change the value to 0 (zero) and see if
things improve. (If that DWORD is not present, don't create it, and don't
alter any other DWORD values.)

Note that any changes (additions, deletions, edits) made while sharing was
enabled will not be available (displayed) in Address Book when sharing is
disabled.

cf. http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/wab.htm#share

If none of the above help, try overinstalling IE6-SP1 [Casual readers,
overinstalling should only be done in Win98 and Win98SE, not in any later
Windows versions!] :

First, close *everything* via CTRL+ALT+DEL except Windows Explorer (includes
your AV program, Scheduled Tasks, Screensaver, and going offline).
Start>Run>IE6Setup.exe. Select Minimal - Custom; Select all the parts you
use, including OE (but none you didn't originally download) and overinstall.
Should take about 2 minutes. Reboot the computer.

Now, with AV and all other running processes still closed, check in at
Windows Update for additional updates and patches you may need.

Well whatever the problem was, it was in the configuration of ZoneAlarm Pro.
I just made sure that access was granted across the board on all Outlook
Express and Internet Explorer headings and now all works. I was able to send
pages/links once I shut down ZA. Thanks for all the time PA Bear, Steve T.
