Report Templates

I've tried to find a thread addressing this problem and didn't see one, but forgive me if it's an incredibly dumb question and I just somehow missed the answer. =

I am trying to create a "template" report so that the field layouts will always be the same size, font, location, etc. I am building a database for Access-phobics and am using the switchboard to build and run very simple reports. (I.e. "Click here for a report sorted on Project Manager. Click here for a report sorted on Project Name) Thus, the fields appearing in the report will always be the same, and I'd like the layout to remain consistent

I have tried saving a report as a template and setting it as the default in the tools/options/reports section, but I can't figure out how to use/apply the template after that?? Help

Hi Karen,

I have never seen generalized templates for reports that were worth the
bother.

You are already planning to give your users choices. I recommend that you
create a report optimized around what you offer to give them rather than a
"one size fits all/none".

In applications with a lot of reports I use a Reports launching form. On
that form I set up date ranges and other variables and then have the user
select the report they want from a combobox. The query for the combobox
points at a table which has the database name (rptMyReport) and a more
descriptive friendly name (Between dates sorted by Project Manager). To
ease the pain I also created maintenance forms for myself and others to
facilitate entries to the table. On that report launcher form I always put
in an option group for Print/Print Preview. As users become more sure of
themselves using your application they can just fire the report to the
printer. When they're getting started they'll want to know that the report
they asked for is the one they want.

Your idea of generalizing and re-using resources is a good one.
