Replacing selected text

Guest

In Word 2003: I used to be able to select text and then start typing and
Word would replace the selected text with what I was typing. Now when I
select text and begin typing, Word inserts the new letters next to the
selected text. I don't know why it changed. I would like to know how to
change it back. [Pressing the 'insert' button doesn't make a difference]
Thanks

The insert key will not allow substitution of any letters or numbers in 2007,
whereas word 2003 did it without fail. Office 2007 is a step backwards by at
least 20 yrs. Outlook express in office 2007 will not spell check except in
FRENCH (HOW INSULTING IS THIS?)

Hi Don,

Outlook Express is actually part of Internet Explorer rather than being Part of Office and the Windows folks have yet to update that
product to use the Office Word 2007 new proofing tools (It isn't as if they didn't know the changes in Word 2007 were coming <g>).

You can add a spell check to Outlook Express either by doing a 'partial' install of an older version or using one of the 3rd party
tools such as

A. Vampirefo Spellchecker for Outlook Express:
http://geocities.com/vampirefo/

B. Tinyspell: (has separate U.K. English module if needed)
http://tinyspell.m6.net

You can toggle the insert key to 'Insert' or 'overtype' in Word 2007 just as you could in Word 2003. To have it visible on the
status bar on the bottom of the screen, right click on the status bar and choose the 'Overtype' option. You can also use the
setting for 'Uset the Insert key to control overtype mode' in Word's options

Office Files button=>Word Options=>Advanced=>Editing options

I suspect that if you just re-install the Office 2003 proofing tools -
http://www.gmayor.com/office_2003_proofing_tools.htm that you would get your
OE spell check back. The web page refers primarily to the installation of
the supplementary proofing tool package, but it's the Office 11 proofing
'engine' that is at the root of the issue.

Hi Graham,

As I mentioned you can do the prior version partial installation, but a disadvantage of a custom installation of an earlier version
of Office (even if 'just' the proofing tools) is that Office will install its core files set which usually then also may lead to
being prompted to install the prior version updates through Microsoft update as the update engine detects by Office edition not by
installed features :)

Outlook Express does look for the proofing engine and can also see the new one (i.e. the French tools still appear) but the English
ones are different <g>) and it's possible that it's as much marketing as technical resources related to having Outlook Express
provide the tools at this date :)

This is affected by the same setting as in previous versions:

Word 2003 and earlier: Tools | Options | Edit: Typing replaces selection

Word 2007: Office Button | Word Options | Advanced: Editing options: Typing
replaces selected text

Thanks to all. The insert key on the keyboard still will not work but
clicking the new insert button on the bottom ribbon will.
Tiny spell is marginal compared to the spell check in OE with office 2003.
Is MSFT going to fix this?

Are you trying to use the Insert key to toggle Insert vs. Overtype? If so,
make sure that you have "Use the Insert key to control overtype mode"
checked (and "Use overtype mode" unchecked) in Office Button | Word Options
| Advanced | Editing Options and that you have "Use the Insert key for
paste" unchecked in the "Cut, copy, and paste" options.

Hi Don,

You may want to check with the folks in the Outlook Express discussion groups to see if they have heard anything additional on the
Windows/IE folks updating Outlook Express to be able to work with the Office 2007 English proofing tools.

FWIW, folks who have MS Windows but do not have MS Office or Word haven't had the proofing tools in OE at all from Microsoft.

Thanks a lot - this works for 2007 as well:

Word options/Advanced/Editing options/Typing replaces selected text

(I struggled with this for 8 hours...)
