replacing HD

Hey all, need some professional guidance. I recently had a computer that
caught on fire, not in a blazing flame sense but it started smokin big
time... I fried it. Don't know if it was due to improper cooling or what...
No clue... but question is, I have an older computer that is only a pentium
and I think around 200mhz's... It's pretty old... Can I place that hard
drive out of the one that smoked into this one and retrieve files? If not,
can I place it in my other one that is a pentium 3 450 mhz's? if not, Last
but not least, I have a AMD 64 athlon XP3500+ with 1000 mb ram of memory and
256 mb X550 VIDEO... It's very fast, could I just add the HD on as the
Second HD? and how would I go about doing that, in other words, the master
and secondary slave stuff... I am not that keen on all that. Thx for the
time,

ND

You can do any of the mentioned.Set hd in as slave to another hd already
configured to board, then in the OS,open smoked drive and retrieve files. You
won't be able to use smoked drive as master in other boards unless you format
the drive then install OS.If unsure about smoked drive, download the hd DOS
utility from the mfg, install to MS-DOS formatted floppy, boot to
floppy,it'll detect
and scan the hd.

I would rather opt for putting the old hard drive into an
external USB and/or Firewire enclosure and accessing it from
the Athlon system. Sure, some money is involved in getting
the external enclosure but the trade off is not opening the
computer case and fussing with the jumpers, wires and cables.

Installing and connecting hard drives is not an excessively complex
task, but it does require some knowledge of how things work and which
connections are which. And because there is considerable variety in
how things are laid out inside the computer case it is difficult to
give detailed precise instructions without actually seeing the
hardware involved.

So I think your best be it to follow the advice from Mistoffolees. An
external USB hard drive enclosure is not that expensive, and they
usually come with detailed illustrated instructions for installing the
hard drive.

The drive access will not be quite as fast as it would be if it were
installed inside the computer case, but the speed difference is not
that critical.

Good luck
