I neede to replace a motherboard and I do not want to reibnstall windows. I
have a piece of software that cannot be reinstalled and is no longer
available. My old MB used HALACPI.DLL and the new motherboard wants
HALAACPI.DLL. Can this be replaced by simply turning system restore off,
mounting the disk in a USB enclosure on another machine and copying the
file?

Thanks

You can't just throw your old hard drive into a new system and expect
it to "just work" by coping HAL files. You'll have to do an in-place
non-destructive re-install that will keep your programs and settings
but ought to get you where you need to go. Sorry, there's no easy way
around it. Fred Langa's method is the standard by which all others
adhere to for this:
