Replacing defective video card

Hi All,

My GeForce 8800 Ultra just died. It only displays garbage in any mode
and the computer freezes in a few seconds. I bought a new GeForce GTX
295. Everywhere I look on to how to install a new video card, they say
to uninstall the video drivers first, then set the mode to VGA, remove
the old card, install the new card and then install the new drivers.
The thing is that I can't change any mode since the computer freezes.
Since the new card will be using the same GeForce drivers (I updated
them a month ago, maybe that fried the card :) ), is it safe to just
plug the new card in? Thanks.

Maybe. I wonder whether your month-old drivers support the 295.

I suggest swapping the cards, then booting in safe mode (assumes you're
speaking of Windows). That prevents the graphics drivers from loading.
Uninstall the drivers, and reboot into the normal Windows mode.

I hope that you have no further trouble.
