Replacement Phone Dialer

A different dialer wouldn't help you there, especially since you've narrowed
it down to being a lack of a remote response, meaning something timed out.
Look for the "loss of carrier" setting for your modem, and try doubling
it. There are other things too, but that's the most likely one IMO. There
are other timers too, for DTR, which you might try adjusting. If no help,
just keep track and put them back where they were.

Look for a pattern of some sort in the disconnects; time of day, period of
time online, whatever, if the above doesn't help. There are lots of things
can go wrong that can't be easily detected.

Make sure the phone cable running from your modem to your wall isn't
damaged/brittle insulation/running past power lines from other apparatus.
Also be sure to check your computer equipment is correctly grounded; some
modems do -not- like the static feedback non-grounded computers produce
and will deteriorate over time.
If your modem requires drivers, you may also check for driver updates
with the modem manufacturer.
Make sure your modem line speed is set correctly; too low a speed will
cause more frequent carrier drops and hangups.
The highest theoretical speed for an analog dialup modem is 56Kbps, which
equals to roughly 6KBps downlink speed - Theoretically! in practise your
speeds may vary from a little to even wildly if line quality is bad.

Keep DECT wireless phones and mobile cellphones away from your computer's
phone line.

Check your email client for settings that hang up the line after
checking/retrieving email - For example the default setting in Outlook
Express is to hang up the line after checking mail.
