Replacement for Drive Image

W

Walter R.

Since Powerquest was absorbed by Symantec, Drive Image has hit a dead end. I
have used DI, version 5.1, for years to make images of my system. I stored
the images on another partition as a back up and restored them when I messed
up my system. Very easy, reliable and fast.

What is a good replacement for Drive Image? Ghost? Acronis? Any others?

Thanks for any input.

I have heard that Ghost is very good. I have never used any of these
products to back up my system so I have no first hand knowledge of them. I
just back up my data to CD's and if necessary, I reinstall XP. I have never
had to reinstall my operating system because of a problem, I reinstall every
year or so to clean the 'ole hard drive up nice and tidy.

I use the newer 7.0 version with the 7.03 update it works 100% even over the
network.
You can still find 7.0 to download and the update on line

Stick with the Powerquest if you can,I lost faith in Symantecs products ages
ago.

Here is an example of a site for download..

Using Windows XP, I still use PowerQuest Drive Image 2002, see review from
PC World 2002:
http://pcworld.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php?masterid=580574
PowerQuest Drive Image Version 7 was reviewed in PC World 2003
http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,111800,00.asp .
Still Drive Image is inside the newest product
http://www.powerquest.com/sabu/ghost/ghost_personal/ called Norton Ghost 9.0
("Now with Drive Image technology"). On December 5, 2003, Symantec
Corporation acquired the technology and interests of PowerQuest Corporation.
Apparently the basic software code is the same in these 3 programs, the only
differences are cosmetics, and you get some extra ad-ware!

Sincerely

I use Image for Windows - from http://www.BootitNG.com ($27 shareware -
30 day full functional trial)

Looked at Acronis but saw no obvious advantage for the higher price;
apart from Incremental updates which I regard as inappropriate to an
image system and leaves me wondering if it is in fact in the true sense
an image it is making

Ghost V9 is basically drive image 7 rebranded under symantecs banner. As
a long time drive image user I upgraded to ghost V9. Semantec has also added
support for more RAID controllers etc. I have used this software to backup
and recover system which is installed on a SATA RAID drive(s). Opinions
vary but I have found no issues with ghost v9 at this time...

What do you mean, it's hit a "dead end"? I recently bought Drive
Image 7, which, though sold by Symantec, was not written by the
Symantec elves. It works just fine.
