Replace attached template -- Word 2003

We often get technical docs from developers and the docs have templates
attached to them that the developers don't still have. In the Organizer we
attempt to attach a new template to the doc, but nothing happens. The
non-existent template that was used to create the doc does not seem to be
removable. We're then unable to update styles by selecting all instances and
clicking on a new style. Our only means so far to reformat docs is to take
these large docs all the back to plain text and start over with formatting.

I'm hoping to hear there's a better way.

If you really mean the Organizer, that dialog is not for attaching a
different template, it's for copying styles and such from one template
or document to another.

The dialog you want is Tools > Templates & Add-Ins. Click the Attach
button and choose another template.

You should read

what to do next.
