I would like the date to repeat in a letter in four different places

If it's an automatic date, insert either a DATE field or a CREATEDATE field
at each of the four places. The difference is that the DATE field will
update to the current date every time you open the document, which is
probably not what you want for a letter. The CREATEDATE field will always
show the date the document was created. (More at
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/TblsFldsFms/DateFields.htm.)

If it's a date you enter by hand, use a bookmark at the first location and
REF fields at the others. See http://gregmaxey.mvps.org/Repeating_Data.htm
for explanation.
