repeative hangs

I've just reinstalled WinXP and after the installation of winxp, the drivers
SP1a, and all the security updates, and dx9 Im getting a hang which occurs
about once a minute and lasts five seconds or so, nothing is working during
the hang even the cursor stops blinking, though it does buffer keyboard
input, any ideas what might be happening and how to fix it?

Oh I forgot to mention that after a while it gets worse, programs refuse to
close, explorer stops responding and eventually Im forced to do a hard
reset...
