repeating, uncessant clicking sound

About every 30 seconds I get a "click" sound - the same sound which I get when I click on a link in IE. It is as annoying as a dripping water faucet, or even more so, because I don't know what causes it. Is there some elf that clicks on some link while I don't watch? Is there a feasible way to find out short of stopping each program and startup one by one? (My startups look innocent: they are igfxtray, ctfmon, hkcmd, realmon, wcescomm, msmsgs and the One Note Quick Launch.)What if I find out it is IE, after all?

Run adaware and spybot firstly.
If this doesnt fix it then check your processes for
something out of place..

It may be a banner ad on the site that you're on while
online. When some of them change, they'll make a clicking
sound just like the ones that you hear when you click on
a link.

I am having the same problem and haven't a clue what
causes it but it is driving me mad. I hope someone can
help.

Since neither you nor the poster who hijacked your thread said what
you've done to troubleshoot: go to the Sounds applet in Control Panel
and uncheck everything. Click Apply and OK. Then, go to Start>Run and
type "msconfig" without the quotes. Go to the Startup tab and uncheck
igfxtray, realmon, and msmsgs. Perhaps realmon - which might be a
monitor of some sort for the ever-invasive program RealOne - is
clicking. Certainly, you should look in the program's preferences and
stop it from automatically looking for upgrades and monitoring. Check
and see if your Windows Messenger (msmsgs) is set to make noise, or if
you have another instant messenger client like AIM running. When the
clicking happens, open Task Manager and see what programs and processes
are running. And of course, you should always scan for spyware and
viruses with the appropriate tools to be sure your computer is clean.
Remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy from www.security.kolla.de
and Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure to update these programs
before running them. It is best to run antivirus and spyware removal
tools in Safe Mode.

Since no one can see your computer(s) from here, you'll have to try
these things and Sherlock what program might be responsible yourself.
After you've done some troubleshooting, if you still need help then
please repost. Be sure to include information about what you've already
done.

Thanks everyone for your great collection of replies! In fact, it was the easiest cause in my case: One page in IE auto refreshed. (BTW, this is also shown visually by the green progress bar that shortly appears at the right side of the status strip.) The page is an internal page that I need for work, so I know that it's not caused by malware, which makes it much easier to accept.
However, it is still a signal which I would not want to get numb to. As some of the replies said, this may indicate unwanted activities. Is there a way to turn this signal off for this particular site only? Since it is an internal site, there may be a chance that this could be done by our admins?

It's a program specific setting, meaning that it's either enabled for IE or not, and all browser pages are going to have the same sound. Personally, that sound effect is one of the first things I turn off -- it's just a nuisance to me.
