Repeated Explorer problems

I've got problems with Windows Explorer in XP Pro SP2. Here are some of
the symptoms, may not all be related:

Sometimes I notice the icons on my Desktop go away for a moment.
Windows Explorer freezes, often when I am in a folder with jpgs.
Sometimes I get an error message, sometimes I have to end Explorer.
Occasionally, after Explorer has crashed, Dr Watson will crash also.

Is there a way to find out what is causing this?

No replies. Does that mean there is no way to find out what causes
Explorer to crash? No system log or whatever?
