I'm hoping someone can help. I have a problem with XP and
I'm trying to use the recovery CD Rom to do a repair to
the existing installation. The trouble is that it's
asking me for the administrator password before it will
carry out the repair. It is so long since I set the
machine up that I have forgotten the password. Can anyone
suggest an alternative or a bypass / shortcut to avoid
this?

If you want to do a repair install, you don't want to load the Recovery
Console. See the links below for steps to fix the RC password problem and
also to Repair Install.

You boot from the CD and do a clean install.
Click on or copy and paste the link below into your web browser address bar.

You are choosing the option to repair the XP install using the recovery
console. If you want to do a repair install, bypass that option during the
XP CD bootup. When booting with the XP CD, skip the first option to repair
with the recovery console and choose to install instead. The setup routine
will detect your existing installation and give you the option to do a
repair install.

|Hi!
|There is no need of Recovery Console;go for " XP Repair Install"

the OP didn't use the phrase "Recovery Console" he used the phrase
"Recovery CD" - thus intimating that XP was pre-installed on the
machine.

Thanks - yes, the problem is that I cannot use the repair
instal function without the administrator's password. Is
there an alternative, or do I need to go for another
option? I'm anxious not to lose the work that I have on
the PC, some of which I'm sorry to say, I didn't back up.

Have you tried leaving it blank?

Hi Hamish!
For XP Home, the default password is blank, so just hit Enter. For Pro,
enter the same password you did during setup for the Administrator
account. This is not the same as the password for an Admin level account.
It must be the Administrator account password.
If you forget the password for this old administrator account you can
reset it using Windows XP/2000/NT Key. This tool has also been developed
by Passware.
