I need to repair my xp installation using the repair
console, but it keeps asking me for an "administrator
password", and won't accept the password I give it. Is
there anyway to bypass this step so I can repair the
installation?

This will turn off the recovery console asking for the
password.

Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVer
sion\Setup\RecoveryConsole
Set the DWORD SecurityLevel value to 1
Exit Registry and Reboot

Repair install:

Boot from the XP cd, and when prompted hit enter to begin setup. Press F8 to
accept the license agreement. It will then search and find your existing XP
install. Select it, and choose R for repair. Back up any important data
files in case something goes wrong.

If you do a repair you are not asked for a password; you are trying to enter
the recovery console. Is this what you want to do? For a repair follow this:

Start the operating system from the CD-ROM,

When the computer starts from the CD, the system checks your hardware

and then prompts you to select one of the following options:

To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Press ENTER.

Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.

A box lists your current Windows XP installation, and then the system

prompts you to select one of the following options:

To repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.

To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing, press
ESC.

Press R to start the automatic repair process. After repairing Windows XP,

you will probably need re-download all updates, starting with SP1. You can
go to the Windows site and download

the XP Rollup 1 package, which will make the reinstalling of the updates
much easier and quicker.

The repair installation should leave all your data and settings intact, but
you may want to backup critical data.

It should be looking for the one set during Setup for the account called
'Administrator' - not that for the regular day to day user
(administrator account) you use. If you do not remember setting one, it
is probably blank - TAB over the request and Enter.
