repairing XP

i am concidering repairing XP. When i repair, do all the
different users loose all their information (eg. desktop
links). also, do My Documents remain in tact or do i have
to back it up along with any other files. What happens to
the Regestry?.... is it refreshed or are the entries left
alone?
