repairing oem installed windows xp

On start up I keep getting the error message: "Windows was unable to load
because the following file is missing or corrupted:
windows\system32\config\system"

I unfortunately did not make back up recovery cds and since windows came
preinstalled I don't have the original setup cds.

The Microsoft help article on this problem explains how to repair it using
the setup cds but it also cautions not to use those procedures with oem
installed software.

So how does one with oem-installed windows xp fix the problem??

Contact the computer manufacturer (the OEM) and ask them.

Time to purchase the CD for the OS you want to use.

You cannot do a repair install using an OEM CD. You can reinstall the OS to
its original configuration (fresh from the factory) menaing everyhting is
lost. Or buy a real XP CD and then try a repair.

No, this is not true. You can't do a repair installation with an
OEM restore CD, but not all OEM CDs are restore CDs. An OEM
installation CD *will* do a repair installation.
