I am getting error codes of Code 39 or CD drive and Code 19 when for my
scanner.
I found the fix for the cd drive but not for the scanner. It is a Visioneer.
I uninstalled the Roxio software and the cd shows up but if I go to
reinstall Roxio I get the error again.
My question is if I do a Windows XP repair wil it correct all of the corrupt
registery files?

A reinstall may well *not* solve registry problems due to 3rd party software
defects or hardware incompatibilities.

"Code 19
Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration
information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. To fix this problem
you can first try running a Troubleshooting Wizard. If that does not work,
you should uninstall and then reinstall the hardware device. (Code 19)

Recommended resolution

A registry problem was detected.

This can occur when more than one service is defined for a device, if there
is a failure opening the service subkey, or if the driver name cannot be
obtained from the service subkey. Try these options:

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the
Troubleshooting Wizard. Click Uninstall, and then click Scan for hardware
changes to load a usable driver. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, and then
select Last Known Good Configuration. This rolls back to the most recent
successful registry configuration.

As a last resort, you can edit the registry directly. "

"Code 39
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be
corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Recommended resolution

Reasons for this error include a driver that is not present; a binary file
that is corrupted; a file I/O problem, or a driver that references an entry
point in another binary file that could not be loaded.

Uninstall the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall
or upgrade the driver.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the
Troubleshooting Wizard. "

For the Roxio problem, look for updates for the Roxio software, and install
the updates before trying to use the software. Be sure that the Roxio
version you are trying to install actually does work with your verision of
Windows and your hardware.

Or, find something else that is compatible with your CD or replace the CD
with another drive that IS compatible. CD -DVD/RW drives are cheap now and
trivial to install; I've recently bought them for under CDN$50 complete with
Nero Express.

For the Visioneer Code 19, this page is what they have to say about it:
http://www.visioneer-europe.com/support/faqs/80.htm

And one of the links from this list
http://groups.google.ca/groups?hl=en&q=code 19 visioneer&sa=N&tab=wg

mentions that at least two viruses (Klez and BugBear) are known to cause
this error with scanners.

I tried all of the options that you noted.
I guess if nobody else can come with an solution I just might have to
reinstall Wondows.
What a pain.

it may help if you disconnect all the equipment from the pc when repairing
windows or reinstalling. leave only your mouse, kb and display
connected....

Thanks.
If I am not mistaken repairing will not fix the registry problems, so I have
to do a reformat and install.
Do you know where I can get a document that details exactly how to do a
reinstall?

Sorry for not responding sooner. The registry would be restored by a
reinstall of windows . But just for your info. the registry could also be
restored manually via the recovery console as well.

Thanks.
Just spent about 7+ hrs to format hard drive, reinstall Windows and my
software.
Everything is working now so far.
