repair of missing files

Tech support says I need to repair missing files in order to boot my system.
To do this I must start the computer with the XP cd in. I do not have my cd
and must buy a new one. My question is: Do I have to by the full version or
will the upgrade work?

I believe you need to use the same version cd as is presently installed,
that is if you wish to preserve your existing files/data

You need to use the same version that is installed at present. If not you are able to use one that is different but you will most likely lose all your saved data as DL has pointed out for you
