Repair of IE and OE in XP

XP Pro SP1
3 gb free space on boot drive
512Mb ram

Have googled the problem and everyone says to follow "Microsoft Knowledge
Base Article - 318378 " ... or they just reprint it without giving credit
;-) ....

Anyway, I followed it, and on reinstalling IE6 ... or rather running IE6's
SP1 ...

(just going to Windows Update and scan for updates did not ... for whatever
reason ... discover that IE and OE were now "uninstalled" (installed = 0))

... from microsoft canada's download page ... I got no improvement / fix
of my problems ... which involve:

a) can't change IE's "home page" ... ever since installing WebShots (now
uninstalled .... grrrrrr ##$%&* )

b) clicking on *some* links don't work ... whereas they work fine on my
spare computer (Win98SE) connected to the same router.

Thanks !

I gather from the lack of resonse, that perhaps the answer to my problem is
FDISK and reinstall?

I.E., that if a repair based on the instructions in #318378 does not work,
there are no altrenate suggestions ?

Thanks !
