I have a problem with my XP SP3 where it doesn't play midi sounds anymore. I
can't select the midi playback device in sounds under control panel.

I was hoping maybe a windows "repair" might fix that, but do I need a
special disc to do a repair of XP SP3 cause my original install disc is just
SP1.

I sorta remember once before having to do something to make like a combined
disc so i could do something with SP2 ..

You 'slipstream' the SP3 download with the XP SP1 CD you have and burn a new
XP w/SP3 CD; then do a system 'repair. Google slipstreaming for info and
Google AutoStreamer for a program that makes slipstreaming easy.

Google for:
Integrate SP3 into WIndows XP installation media

You can go to Start:Run and use "dxdiag" to do some testing. This is from the
Music tab of the dxdiag screen. Selecting some of the options here, don't
create sound, since they forward bytes to an actual Game Port midi pins.

Ports:

Microsoft Synthesizer, Software (Not Kernel Mode), Output, DLS, Internal, Default Port
MPU-401, Hardware (Kernel Mode), Input, No DLS, External
MPU-401, Hardware (Kernel Mode), Output, No DLS, External
C-Media Wave Device, Software (Kernel Mode), Output, DLS, Internal
Microsoft MIDI Mapper [Emulated], Hardware (Not Kernel Mode), Output, No DLS, Internal
Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth [Emulated], Hardware (Not Kernel Mode), Output, No DLS, Internal
MPU-401 [Emulated], Hardware (Not Kernel Mode), Output, No DLS, External
MPU-401 [Emulated], Hardware (Not Kernel Mode), Input, No DLS, External

DXDIAG has a "Save All Information" button, so you can copy some info from
the screen display.

In the above, I have a CMI8738 sound card, and no motherboard sound. The sound
card has a Game Port.
