Hi,

On my Windows 2000 server when i go to rename a exe file
and a user is currently in that file, it will let me
reanme it then update the users shortcut link with the new
file name.

In the past i'm sure it wouldn't let me rename it as i
didn't have exclusive access.

Is this correct?

You can't rename a file that's in use, at all. And if the user created a
shortcut to it, or you created a shortcut to it, it isn't going to be
updated automatically...although when they get the message that it couldn't
find the file, it may search to find the "new" one.

Yes it is correct....
The sharing and accessing of files are handled by the files rdbss.sys and
mrxsmb.sys.
SMB allows us to be more interactive with file access. As in before, we
used to get a "file in use" and identify
the user. We were always able to continue, however now it is more virtual
to allow seemless access.

Usually you can rename a exe file even if it is in use (Win2k/WinXP)...

And if the user created a
shortcut to it, or you created a shortcut to it, it isn't
going to be updated automatically...

Actually, the shortcut will be updated automatically if you rename
the target file...
