renaming music files

Is renaming music files a violation? Because, when i rename one of my
music files, it just says"Cannot rename fergilisious.mp3". What does
that mean?

It could mean that that file is in use by some program. Or that the intended
name contains characters considered illegal by the operating system. Or that
another file with that name (case insensitive, full path included) exists.
