Renaming a music file

I have always been able to do a right click on any music file and change the
name, however, when I try to rename a file now, I get a message telling me if
I change the file extension, the file may become usable. I'm not doing
anything different so will you please tell me what's wrong? I have numerous
files I need to rename and place them in the format I have used for years.

Sounds like you've turned off the option to "Hide extensions for known file types" in Explorer's
view options. When extensions are shown, you need to explicitly retype them when renaming a file.
