Renaming files in MM shuts down program

I have WXP, and my version of MM says 5.1.

I captured video from my mini DV tapes in avi format. Every time I try and
rename a file an error message appears telling me to Debug (pressed the
button, nothing has changed), and then closes Movie Maker.
 
Where are you trying to rename the files? In movie maker? Are they on the
timeline?
What happens if you try renaming them in explorer
