Renaming Files/Folders

I'm sure this question probably came up a few times, but I can't find any
recent ones. When I try to rename a file or folder I get an error message
saying that the folder does not exist.

I did some self research before coming here and I found this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934160
but it says to find: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Csc
I don't have a 'Csc'

Is there any other way of curing this problem or to add it in somehow?

The first thing to answer - instead of immediately going to the registry
- is where the files/folders are that you are trying to rename. For
instance, you would get that error if you are trying to work with one of
the junction locations instead of the actual location.

I understand what you're saying, but I also get that error message when
trying to rename a folder that i just created on the desktop. It happens with
new and existing files/folders.

I don't have a problem creating the folder, just renaming it. But I tried
that registry fix anyway but still no luck. Any more ideas?

I ran the sfc /scannow and it said that it found corrupt files but was unable
to fix them. As far as your "plan b", I'm not home and I won't be for a while
and my Windows Vista disc is at home. The scan did fix renaming existing
files but I still can't rename new folders that I make. What do you suppose I
do now?

I hope you're not getting annoyed with this problem. I really do appreciate
you helping me. I did the Check Disk and then tried the sfc /scannow again
and still no luck. I got the same message from the scannow saying that it
found corrupted files but was unable to fix it. Check disk found no bad
sectors as well and I still can't rename a folder. What else do you suppose
is causing this? Did something get erased or changed somehow? I never had
this problem with any of my computers in the past that's why I seem so lost

Brink I just wanted to thank you for the extent of your help. The repair
install did it. I used a Vista CD that someone near me had at the time.
Everything is back to normal. Thanks again!
