Renaming a non-renamable file.

Recently acquired a computer with XP installed. Previous user had set
it up as c:\Documents & Settings\His Name\another folder\another folder,
etc.

I'd like to change His Name to My Name, but it won't let me, saying it's
a system folder and can't be renamed or moved. Any solution?

Why do you want to use his account?

Start your own.

It seems to me, and I could be wrong, in which case I'm
sure someone will correct me, that no, you can't change
the name of that folder. Is it possible ? Yes it's
possible with certain tools. But the best solution for
you is probably to create a new username, in which case a
folder will be created under Documents and Settings with
the new username and My Documents, etc. under it.

You can delete the old username but if you do, the
old "His Name" folder will be deleted, after Windows warns
you that it's going to delete the old user's documents,
etc. and that it's permanent.

Create a new user account then if you really want the profile you can use
the Copy To function to mirror the profile. Logon at least once as the new
user. Then while logged on as another user (with administrative rights)
Control Panel|System|User Profiles, select oldprofile, Copy To, Browse to
%systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\newprofile
Change "Permitted to use:" to "newprofile" OK.

The easiest way is to create a new account and copy the data from old
to new account:

Then when you are sure all is OK, delete the old profile from User
Accounts.

Since the computer is new to you, the best solution is to back-up any
important data and then perform a Clean Installation:

This will eliminate all garbage, known and unknown.

With any used computer I would start completely clean with a fresh
installation of the oprating system. You never know what problems you
may have inherited with the existing installation. Just my $.02
