How do I rename "Bill's Music" back to "My Music"

W

William Low

Somehow at some point, two of my "My Documents" subfolders -- My Music and
My Videos -- became renamed Bill's Music and Bill's Videos, respectively.
However, my "My Documents" folder does not say Bill's Documents, nor does My
Pictures folder say Bill's Pictures.

I had moved the location of My Documents to another partition through Tweak
UI for Windows XP, so I don't whether that had an effect, and even after I
noticed the name changes some time later, it did not seem to affect
anything, but recently when I tried to install Apple's iTunes 7 it would not
install because it said it could not locate the My Music folder, and I
thought I'd tried to correct what brought on the name change before I try to
install WMP 11.

Any guesses what caused it and how I can rename the files because Windows XP
won't seem to let me do a right-click "rename."

Thanks,

Bill

....Create the folders with the name you want (e.g. My music)
....Using tweakui, change the location of folders to the new folders you made

Example for My Music
Create a folder My music
Tweak UI > My computer > Special folders > My music from the drop-down list >
Change location > Select the newly created My music folder

The bigger problem here is Apple dictating what the folders on your own
personal computer must be named. Even worse it must be a 'My' folder!!!

William,

In Windows Explorer, click on tools > folder options and flip to the view
tab. Select "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected
files..". Now navigate to your My Music folder and delete the dektop.ini
file. This should set the folders name back to My Music instead of Bill's
Music.

It sounds like when you moved 'My Documents', the 'My <media>' subfolders themselves were moved, but
the registry entries for the associated system folders were still pointing to their old locations on
the C: drive.

The apparent name change is most likely caused by the 'desktop.ini' file within the folders. If you
navigate to one of these folders & display the full path in the address bar, the actual name of the
folder will probably still be 'My Music'. The 'desktop.ini' file contains a section like this:

[DeleteOnCopy]
Owner=Keith
Personalized=13
PersonalizedName=My Music

If this information is found in a system folder of the logged on user, it is ignored. Otherwise,
the display name of the folder is changed to "<Owner>'s Music". The 'PersonalizedName' string must
match the name of the folder it is contained in for the display name to be applied.

Use TweakUI to point the 'My Music' special folder to the folder currently appearing as 'Bill's
Music' and the name should change back to 'My Music' and iTunes shouldn't complain.
