renaming a computer

What is the proper procedure for renaming a computer..... When I log into
the workstation as a domain admin and try to change it, I get the following
error:

"multiple connections to a server or a resource by the same user using more
than one user name......"

The workaround that I have been using is to exit the domain, reboot and then
reenter the domain with the new computer name.

There has to be a more elegant method.

Check if you mapped drive to network share. Disconnect the mapped drive and
rename again.
