Renamed acconts

When creating new users I usually copy a like account then rename it to the
new user. On more than one occasion a user will try to open a file that is
in use by another user and the user listed as having the file open is the
account the actual user that has the file open, was renamed from.

For example user one and new user two. Copy user one's account and rename it
to user two. User one tries to open a file that user two has open. The error
is "can not open the file, user one has it open". Actually user two has the
file open. This causes confusion with users in that some of the accounts are
renamed from users that are currently NOT working here and this message
comes up that appears that a terminated user has a file open.

Then panic sets in with management while I try to explain to management just
what is happening and I get those looks like "yea sure what's *really* going
on here can't you keep those fired people off our servers"?

TIA

In AD Users & Computers, when you right click on a user and click Copy, you
should get a window like you're creating a new user, where it asks you to
fill in the person's name and logon name and all that jazz...

The way I do it, I go through there, and put in the new user's info... like
I'll copy User1 by right clicking them, then going Copy. I'll put User2
info in the name boxes, and in the logon name put in 'user2' or whatever
their ID is, and hit next. It asks for the password you want to assign, put
that in as usual, set options, next. Make a mailbox (if you have Exchange
and need a mailbox for them).

Are you following the same steps as me?

That seems to be the same steps I'm taking.

During the copy/rename process, what you see gets changed and on some level
Win 2k server knows it was renamed because it does not come back with
duplicate ID, but on another level (I've only seen this on the error message
that gets displayed if two people try to open the same file) Win 2k doesn't
realize the account has been renamed because where ever it is pulling the
username to put in the error message, it doesn't realize the account has
been renamed, it uses the original username I renamed this account from.

Very annoying.

I didn't know that happens with renamed accounts, but it happens with
renamed policies. Very confusing if you have a policy named Install SP3,
renamed to Install SP4. The event log messages stick with the old name, so I
can believe it with accounts. Maybe there is something in ADSI Edit, but you
would not want to edit more than a few accounts,

Anthony
