Rename Remote Site

R

Rob Giordano \(Crash\)

No you'd not want to name it C:\bytheindigorabbit.com that would put it in
the root of your C: drive...wonky!

You'd probably want it something like this: C:\my websites\indigorabbit -
NO extension
That is to say in ANY folder on C...and without an extension

Where is it now?

Your link doesn't work.

Joan,

In Expression the "local" and "remote" terms are interchangeable depending
on if you publish to or from the live web. If you publish to the live web
it is the *remote* server if you publish from the live web it is the *local*
machine.

I'm not sure what you're trying to do....but I think you want to asking how
to publish to your computer from the web server or from your computer to the
web server (??). It's not about *changing the name* of the local web. Also,
there's nothing on your site at http://bytheindigorabbit.com at the moment.

Are you wanting to publish a photogallery or something (from
Kodakgallery.com?) or are you wanting to publish a web site created in
Expression to your web site?

To publish, open your Expression site (File > Open > Site) and browse to the
location on your hard drive, click Open. It will come up with the list of
files in taht site, so you can then go to File > Publish Site, specify the
URL to your live site, logon with the details your host/ISP given you for
your web hosting.

Or, if working directly on the live site (not a good idea in case their
systems go down, if you don't have a local copy you'll have no back up to
restore the site) open your Expression site (File > Open > Site) type in the
URL to the live site, put in your logon details etc.

If you're working on the live site, to publish down to the local computer
(your PC) go to File > Publish Site, then to Remote Site Properties, and
choose "Local File system" (since you're publishing to your computer).

This would be: http://bytheindigorabbit.com to C:\documents and
setttings\[username]\my documents\my webs\bytheindigorabbit.

In the Remote Web Site tab, choose "File System", specify a location on your
hard drive (e.g. c:\bytheindigorabbit, although most people would publish
to the "My Webs" folder.

In the same way if you want to publish from your PC to the web server, you
open the site locally from the location on your hard drive, and type in the
URL to the site using the 'Frontpage' or FTP method (which ever your host
supports; http: requires the server extensions).

This would be: C:\documents and setttings\[username]\my documents\my
webs\bytheindigorabbit. to http://bytheindigorabbit.com

You don't need the '.com' bit for the local folder name.

I'm not sure if this addresses or even answers your question but hope it
leads to a solution for you.

If not, please explain in specific detail exactly what you want to do - is
it something to do with Kodakgallery - like publishing a photo gallery type
thing, and exactly why you need to change the local site name (which is the
remote site from a different POV as explained above)?

I can't access that link you've given - the kodak gallery site prompts for
a login.

Its there but you gotta use http://www.theindigorabbit.com/index.html ...
probably a case of incorrect homepage name.

That's right. I meant C:\my documents\bytheindigorabit etc. or something
other than what it is. Sorry. I really do know better.
My site isn't up right now.

I'm using FrontPage 2003 not Expression. I should have been more clear and
I'm sure you get super frustrated trying to help people wh aren't.

My site is not actually up and running. It is just 'there'! I'm not trying
to publish a gallery. I offered the screen shot so you could see what it
looks like on my computer. I would like to get the remote where it's
supposed to be and local where it is supposed to be. The terms got switched
about 6 months ago when I changed computers. In the past two months a LOT
has happened. I lost my web host, the host I lost wouldn't let me transfer
with no down time, my computer crashed, I'm using a junky spare right now and
I could go on and on about email etc. but - this seems to be the only thing I
really can't handle. I would like not to have to do a work around I think.
I'm not to worried about where the site is on my computer as long as it isn't
on the drive. It's been and is in My Network Places right now and has been
for about two years.

When I try to publish now I get a message saying I can't publish to the
same address as the local. I have been publishing to C instead of http. It
just doen't seem to be working very well right now and I'm getting
frustrated. What I would really like to know how to do is purge my computer
of frontpage and my site and start all over. I tried and wasn't successful.
All the old stuff was still there and FrontPage picked it right back up when
I reinstalled.. I only have a one page site right now so this would be a
good time before I expand the site which is what I have to do now.

I'm sorry I misled and confused you. I hope you can understand what I'm
asking now. I really appreciate any help I can get with any of it.
Thanks,
Joan

In FrontPage the first site you open is always the Local Site. This
could be on your computer, or on the Moon - it is still termed the Local
site.
The Site you publish to is always the Remote site, again this could be
on your computer, or on Venus - it is always the remote site.

In Windows Explorer create a folder for your local site, if you haven't
already done so.

Open FrontPage, if a site opens use File->Close Site to close it.

Then, File->Open Site and browse to your folder on the PC. This will
open the PC folder as the local site, and you are where you want to be.
