Can anyone suggest a simple rename program. I've been downloading
software recommended here and trying them out and probably could have
spent less time changing each file manually. I've tried 1-4a rename,
rename master, and a program called siren. I'm hoping there's one that
I missed that is idiot proof.

There is NO software that is truly "idiot proof" if the "idiot" is enough
of an "idiot".
i.e. the REM function at the command prompt is reasonably powerful as is.

Bulk Rename Utility is the best and easiest I've ever tried.

You can preview the name change and you can undo them. You can change
everything in a folder at once or just select certain files. You can set up
several changes and apply them all at once.

As is the REN command.

I use MutliRen. It's not exactly idiot-proof, but the syntax isn't that
hard to figure out.

Looks like you have to "sign up" in order to download now :(

I suggest Lupas Rename:

Here you can play around changing the name of the file as much as you
will and you see immediately what will happen after the changes.

I suggest that you give Rename Master another try. I use it all the time
and it doesn't appear all that complex to me.

Generally speaking, if I don't respond to somebody who is acting
immaturely, it's because I've killfiled them.

No adware, cdware, commercial software, crippleware, demoware, nagware,
PROmotionware, shareware, spyware, time-limited software, trialware,
viruses or warez please.

Sorry, i don't know how to do it with supernews as you seem to use that
reader.
It should not be that difficult to find the settings and to change
"dansheen" into the name you've got from your parents.

Seconded.

Kindly regards.

Some renamers are particularly nasty ;)

I'd tried several others, and kept this one because it was *easy*
to figure out, and to make, keep, and change sets of rules.

I briefly searched and couldn't find an available Last Freeware Version
of NIYOW (Name It Your Own Way), mine is 1.0b19 (beta).
It has no EULA file, or LFV prohibition on the homepage I could see.
A persistent search might get lucky.

Have a look at these two, both from Snapfiles.

Try Mrename.

Note: Does not work with my installation of Win98SE.

I use the earlier version of Multiren which I could not find in
Google.

Thanks everyone. I'm downloading them now to try them.

I'm not sure what supernews is. I use thunderbird as my reader.

I think that it is unnecessarily complicated for simple renaming
tasks. I recommend Oscar's Renamer because it lets you
edit file names as you would edit a text file.
http://www.mediachance.com/free/renamer.htm

Thanks for pointing that one out. On that page it lists a feature I liked:

"It can integrate into windows Shell."

so I looked at Rename Master to see if it could also do this and it can.

1. Click on the little hammer button in the lower left hand corner
2. Click on the "System" tab.
3. Put a checkmark by "Show Rename Master on a folder's righ-click menu"
("right" is supposed to be "right" I assume.)

Cool!

The program you recommend looks like a good one too. I, for one though,
will stick with Rename Master because I'm used to it.

Supernews is a newsfeed. My ISP uses it.
