rename font?

How can I rename TruType fonts? I installed them off a Fonts CD
: and they are all numbered. Is there a way to rename them?

Right-click a file and rename it. Enable the ability to see hidden file
extensions from the View tab in Folder Options so you can see the
".ttf" part of the file name. Don't change the extension.

You don't actually give the font a new name, but you can give the file a new
name.
Copy it to a directory other than the fonts directory. Rename the file- take
read only attributes off if needed, it will often be set when copied off a
CD- then move to the fonts directory.

Just curious..........why would you feel a need to change FuturaBlack BT.ttf
to Futura Bk BT?

Is there another issue here which you have not stated?

That is the font name, it's not the file name. It is the file name you can
change not the font name- that is part of the font put together by the font
publisher and they won't want you to change the name of their font.

Can you clarify exactly what you want to do?
Do you only want to rename the file name of the .ttf files?
If so, then surely FontRenamer is for that purpose to do it in bulk.
To do one at a time, just rename the files. (Ensure the attributes are
not "read only")

I'm not sure if this is what was originally wanted, but I seem to have the same problem and can't find an answer for it. Long story short, I have obtained one of those "147 fonts" collections online and the fonts are very useful - EXCEPT for the fact that the internal font names are often exactly the same as the file names, and I can't change that. "UniversLTStd-BoldObl.otf," for instance, has the font name "UniversLTStd-BoldObl" rather than, for instance, "Univers LT Std Bold Italic" - something more in line with what my XP system is willing to accept.

What this means is this: I have UniversLTStd, UniversLTStd-Bold, UniversLT-Obl, and UniversLTStd-BoldObl - Univers, Univers Bold, Universe Italic, and Univers Bold Italic. Essentially this is the same font, its bold version, its italic version, and its bold italic version. However, instead of MS Word listing one Univers font that switches to one of the others when the "bold" and/or "italic" is selected, I have four separate listings for each font. Not all of my new fonts does this, but many do - you can see how this clutters things up.

That's why I want to change the internal font name and not the file name - if I change said names, maybe MS Word will recognize the bold, italic, and bold/italic versions as variations of the same font, as opposed to completely different fonts altogether. Unfortunately, FontRenamer does the exact inverse of what I want to do - it changes the file names to the font names. Misunderstanding this, I laboriously renamed all my font files, only to have FontRenamer change them back to the old file names, which remained as the internal names. And every single search I sent for "font file name rename" or what have you turned out software that did the same exact thing - no help to me.

So can you help me? Do you, or anyone else, know how to change the internal font names so that I can declutter my list of fonts?
