I encountered some of the files when I rename them I need to get rid of 3
pop up confirmation boxes.
Why is that?

Hi Alan,

That would be Vista's UAC (User Account Control) security. It is to
help protect you from you changing something you may not want to change.
It is normal for Vista.

Shawn

Yes, Alan. Vista assumes you're a complete moron. You can disable this
'security' feature in control panel - user accounts - disable - turn user
account control off

3 times though? That is a little excessive...even just once would already
annoy me.

UAC is not to protect YOU from changing things....UAC is to protect
your system or files from being changed by someone else, it is just
asking if YOU are the one who is doing it. So in reality UAC is giving
you more control over your system. If your working with files under
your login in your user folder, UAC does not prompt.

Now that my system is set up with the programs I use, I rarely get any
UAC prompts.

Shouldn't asking once be sufficient though? =)

What do you mean by that?
I had downloaded a file into a directory, then copied this file to another
directory, renamed it, then 3 pop up confirmation boxes in total came up.

I really don't know how much clearer I can make it for you.

There is a folder with your user/login name as long as you work with
files under that folder. You will not get any UAC prompts.

You can access your user folder directly from the start menu. Once you
open it you will see numerous folders such as Contacts, Desktop,
documents, downloads etc etc.

As you can see there are many folders there for most things you will
work with, you can also add folders to your liking as long as you stay
under your user name you will not get any UAC prompts.

There is also another folder called public you can use to share files
with other users who may use your PC and have their own login or across
a network.

So if I put the files under my 'name' folder, there will not any UAC
prompts?

UAC is making sure that no one else is changing my files? Did I not log on
to the computer? Has it lost track of me so I have to log on again and again?

I'll get no confirmation messages if I only use one folder on my machine?
Why did I buy a machine if I'm not allowed to use it the way I want? If I
want to put a file into a folder somewhere on my "C" drive but choose the
wrong place, Vista will hassle me forever about it?
Lovely.
