removing un-necessary components of vista home premium

J

J.P.

I recently bought a new laptop which came pre-loaded with windows
vista home premium. One of the first things I noticed was that ~30
gigs of the disk drive were already in use. I've uninstalled all of
the junk software that came preloaded. At this point I'm looking at
features of vista home premium that I simply have no use for.

I would like to uninstall the following programs:

Windows Mail
Windows Media Center
Windows DVD Maker
Windows Movie Maker
Windows Contacts
Windows Calendar

For each and every one of these applications that came with vista home
premium I am either using an application I consider better or I simply
don't need the software Microsoft has graciously provided to me.

There is no way to remove them through the add/remove programs or
windows components utilities in windows that I can see. Is it even
possible to take this stuff completely off the system without breaking
vista? I.E., if I just go delete them from the file system am I
risking breaking windows? Is there any safe and reliable way to get
rid of this stuff so I can reclaim the wasted drive space?

The items you listed are all Windows Vista system components
and cannot be removed. Please perform a Disk Cleanup.

Click on the blue Vista start button and then on the Computer
entry in the Start Menu. Right-click on your hard drive and
select Properties > Disk Cleanup > Files from all users.....
More Options > Clean Up (System Restore and Shadow Copies).

Another great Vista 'feature'. It saddles you with all of this crap you
can't remove.

JP,

Go to this link and it will tell you how to get to the 'add/remove
windows components' where you can look for any of the items you listed
below and remove them if you like. Good luck.
